TEAM CANADA BC

Picture

Alex Mattes - Captain & Manager

I’ve been a paramedic with BC Ambulance Service for 27 years, starting in 1997 as an OFA attendant on Gabriola Island. Over the years, I’ve worked across BC and progressed to become a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP). I now serve as a PCP Paramedic Supervisor in Nanaimo, BC, a role I’ve held for over 15 years. In this capacity, I supervise and support crews with daily operations and major incidents, while also fostering strong relationships with our First Responder partners (RCMP, Fire, Coast Guard). I’m also a leader and mentor within my team, and have organized and participated in several mock disaster training plans and MCI preparation efforts. I’ve been honoured to receive two nominations and win Paramedic of the Year in Richmond, along with the Life Saving Order from St. John’s. I’m also a proud gold medalist at the Rallye Rejviz. Outside of work, I’m married to my wife Sarah, a police officer, and we have two sons, one of whom has recently joined BCEHS as an EMR Paramedic. We also have a granddaughter. My family has been incredibly supportive of my career and my involvement in this exciting international competition.

I’m honoured and excited to be part of Team Canada BC, and can’t wait to return to the Rallye Rejviz and join our friends from the Czech and Slovak Republics.

Ryan Casselman

Ryan lives with his family in the town of Comox on Vancouver Island.   Currently, he works with BC Emergency Health Services as a Paramedic Practice Educator.  Before that, Ryan operated in many roles, including Critical Care Flight Paramedic, Paramedic Specialist and ACP in Vancouver, BC. Outside work, he enjoys camping with his wife, their son and their dog, anything on a bike, snowboarding, enjoying good food with better wine, and the company of his friends and family.

The 2023 games was Ryan’s first time competing. He is grateful for the opportunity to represent Canadian Paramedics and is inspired by the support of his colleagues, the team organizers, and the sponsors’ generosity.

Andrea (Andie) Bist Gibson

Andie is a Primary Care Paramedic with over 30 years of experience, currently serving the community of Nanaimo, BC. Born and raised on the West Coast, Andie’s career has taken her through many facets of paramedicine—from working on the ground in prehospital care, to a few dynamic years behind the scenes as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher and Acting Charge Dispatcher at the Langford Dispatch Operations Center.

Today, she works as both a front-line PCP and an Acting Off Car Unit Chief, continuing to grow in a career she still genuinely loves. For Andie, paramedicine is about helping people, embracing every opportunity to learn, and meeting the ever-changing challenges of the job alongside a supportive and committed team.

When she’s not in uniform, you’ll find her soaking up the outdoors or chasing her next Orange Theory workout (yes, she’s hooked). Representing Team BC at Rallye Rejvíz in Prague is an exciting opportunity—and a proud moment in a lifelong commitment to the craft.
